CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Chaos Coronation

The morning of my coronation dawned bright, which I took as an auspicious sign. I had slept surprisingly well, exhausted by all the possibilities of the previous day. As requested, Cranleigh had placed operatives on the bridge, but I had not yet seen a report if they were able to capture anyone. Given that Papa had not burst into the room, I rather thought there was no positive outcome. As backup, I’d sent a note to Ella, requesting her to keep an additional eye on the bridge, along with an expensive brooch made of emeralds, which I hoped she would accept as payment for the use of the Astral Princess. For the safety of myself and my father, I would leave no stone unturned.

Juliette…

I sat up in my bed, and announced to the empty room, “Listen, I am getting sick of you, whoever you are. Let us speak clearly.”

Inside my head, the voice chuckled. It was male and the accent was indecipherable. It was both British and not. Ancient and youthful. Overall, it was overwhelmingly powerful.

Thank you.

“Again,” I said aloud, “who are you?”

You have not guessed it yet, your majesty?

I looked to Chirp and said, “I guess I will always remember this day. The day I started speaking to a sword.”

For reasons I could not define, I had retrieved Excalibur for safekeeping in my bedchamber before it would be transported ahead of me to Westminster. With so much intrigue, it seemed the best place for the sword would be in my immediate presence.

Nothing else?

“Did you compel me to bring, er, you here?”

No. You are the true ruler of Britain. I am limited in who I can communicate with.

“Who else can you talk to?”

Do not get ahead of yourself, your majesty.

“So, you’re not Arthur?”

No.

“But you knew him?”

Many years ago.

“Why is the New World Order after you? What do they know that I do not?”

You must discover that truth at your own pace. The admonishment was loud in my ears.

Looking at the small clock on my bedside table, I calculated I had approximately five minutes to myself before Askew, Pippa, and a team of women came into my chambers to begin preparing me for the day ahead.

“Am I going to die today?”

Of my powers, prophecy is not one of them.

“Thank you for that assurance,” I said.

Given we had not met their terms, I expected an attack of some sort from the New World Order. I imagined the incursion would take place before I reached Westminster, thus I would not officially become Queen, but I didn’t know how much they stood on ceremony. If I were planning an attack, I would do so en route. There were simply too many open spots along the way. I knew Cranleigh was trying to mitigate snipers with a fleet of airships in the sky, but there was only so much ground they could cover. The Captain also fussed about my being kidnapped, which I argued was impossible, based on the number of bystanders.
